The Joy of Giving
Soothe your spirit by giving back to the world.
(Editorial)
A friend and I were discussing the practice of donating money the other day. She made an excellent point about how it’s doubtful that much of the money that gets donated to church truly gets used for good causes. She tells a story of a man soliciting donations for church. He was an attractive man wearing clothes nicer than anything she’d ever be able to afford, expensively framed glasses, and a charismatic attitude. He was asking the poor people of the area to donate ten percent of their paychecks to god. This was at a time when she was struggling to pay her bills, and here’s some guy wearing a suit that could pay her bills for two months asking her to donate money to the church. She felt the guy was taking advantage of the people of the church and was furious. So she told me she couldn’t see the idea of giving money to church.
And while I can totally understand her viewpoint on that particular situation, I have a different view on tithing. I think this is just another example of a good idea getting twisted by the egos of man. It is a great thing to give back to the world! Witchcraft teaches the law of three: What you set into motion in the world will come back to you threefold. This ties into my idea of karma in that you get what you deserve, in the long run. The Buddhist idea of karma is actually different in that karmic retribution comes back in another lifetime, as opposed to this one; the whole of karmic retribution is based on an entire lifetime of deeds.
I prefer the idea of a little karma. I like thinking that if I set positive actions into motion in the world, that it will spread, kind of a karmic chain reaction. If I practice random acts of kindness, maybe the person on the receiving end will do something nice for someone else. And maybe one day, when I’m in desperate need of a good deed, god will send someone my way to return the favor. I believe that if I show my appreciation for the good things in my life and for the lessons that I learn from the less favorable situations, the universe will rejoice.
The idea of donating 10 percent of your paycheck to church is too rigid for my tastes. There are probably a lot of people who can afford to give 10 percent of their paychecks to god. There are probably equally as many people who can’t get past the fact that ten percent of their paycheck is the grocery bill. I could never accept a practice that leaves people financially hurting. And so I think that the donation of money is something that is not for everyone. There is so much to give to the world other than cold hard cash: time, love, understanding, knowledge.
When you do give money to god, where should the money go? Should you donate strictly to church? Maybe you feel like you want to give money to god, but you aren’t sure that it will get the best use if you donate to a church. Or maybe you don’t attend a church and don’t want to give money to one. That’s perfectly okay! Don’t ever let anyone make you feel guilty about not attending church or not giving money to a church! There is a lot of need in the world, maybe you can make a dent. Find a charity that fills your needs or start your own! Maybe there is a particular cause that is close your heart? Stick with that and do what you can on a small level. The positive vibrations from lots of little good deeds add up to some big time loving energy. Every little bit counts.
Stuck for ideas for giving back to the world? Donate clothes you no longer wear and items you no longer use to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or a local shelter. Or find someone in need of something that you have and give the items directly to someone who needs them. Trust your gut instincts. If you think the best way to give back to the universe is to anonymously buy a pizza for the guy upstairs, go with that. God is happy when you act out of love. Just try it and see. When you act out of love, the world is a nicer place. Really.
